Re: A/C question

That's true. I did miss the word necessarily. I've "converted" several systems, just by adding 134a to the existing system. No oil change, no dryer change, no taking out the r-12. Yes, that's right, I have 3 trucks, (2 fords and a dodge) in my fleet running mixed refrigerants. The whole "conversion" thing is a bogus scam.

Nope the hoses and O-Rings are different as well. The new hoses are a Barrier hose. They are a rubber hose that has a Teflon inner hose liner. That is because the 134A has smaller atoms than the R-12 and can actually pass through the R-12 hoses unless they have been in use a long time, then the oil itself seals the hoses. Also different are the O-Rings, standard R-12 ones are not compatible with the oil used in R-134A, they break down and leak unless they have also been in use for a long time. For the guys who just put R-134A into a R-12 system you are just using the R-134a to displace the missing R-12. If you are real lucky it will work,however it is not the correct thing to do. Kind of like throwing masking tape over a rust hole, yeah it works but it isn't correct.

Yes, they are completely different. But don't take my word for it. Please continue to live in blissful ignorance.

Well I didn't spell it wrong, so here goes...

"Barrier" like in 'barricade.' Something that would stop movement of something else. The R-134a molecule is fairly small, normal AC hoses have been known to allow R-134a to escape right thru the rubber, much the same as how a Helium filled baloon deflates over time because the Helium molecule can slip past the rubber molecules. If you actually have the experience you claim, the term "barrier" hose should not be unfamiliar.

"MY" = Model Year.

Oooops... ignore the snide remark about "experience" in my other reply to this post, major brain fart on my part thinking I was responding to Squealwheel.

Publically admitting to having intentionally created contaminated refrigerant is not something one is wise to do.

So Mike, Did you fix your AC?

Yeah. It blows nice and cold, for now. I need to fiddle a bit with the switch, put a little counter-clockwise pressure on the switch and the A/C kicks in. I checked at the local dealer, I may have them order the part, it's $28. Can't get the connector for the wiring harness though, so if that's the problem, I gotta find another way to fix it...

Doesnt it have just two spades sticking out of the switch?

If so you can get female spade terminals and just connect them to the wires.

If it is the switch, ANY good parts store will have it. It's a VERY common item on ALOT of chevy's

p.s. you dont have to evac to the AC to change it. just unscrew the old, and screw on the new.

And your excuse for failing to read the From: line is what? Barking Steve is not me. Get a clue, oh pompous ass.

94 and up? It can't have R-12 in it! LOL just kidding.

Mike, no matter what refrigerant it's got in it, the cycling switch has a shrader valve behind it. Unscrew it, screw the new one in it's place. Takes like 5 minutes, and a 5/8" wrench or a pair of pliers.
