I think I have a electrical problem causing my torque sensor to trip, how can I have this checked, or how do I check this?

This is a 97 s10 with a 4.3 motor. The trans is auto with over drive. I had a Goodyear put it on a complete computer. They couldn't tell me why the light comes on in the dash service engine, but he thought there was a short in the speed sensor. I replaced the speed sensor today, and that didn't work Every thing works fine then after I drive say 20 miles then turn it off and come out of a store and start it, the first time I put it into drive something trips. The trans is in second gear, and wont go into 1st when it happens, I figured out today. The shift sensor maybe next?

I was told it was the torque, by a Auto z>> The service engine light goes on, The computer in the truck says it >> the

Take it to a GOOD shop. Goodyear does NOT fall in that category. Then get the numeric code that is stored in the computer. Then follow the proper diagnostic tree for that code. What you are discovering is that the code you get may not even be remotely related to the problem that is causing it.

If you have a shorted speed sensor you would start by testing the sensor itself, while looking at the scanner to see what it is telling the computer. Then tracing the harness back through the vehicle and look at the connections and wires. The short could also be in the computer, or it may be that something else in the transmission is causing the same type of fault that a short would cause.

Occasionally you will find a guy or gal working in a parts store who is retired mechanic looking for a little extra cash (a very little I might add) and really knows his stuff, as long as he hasnt been out of it too long, its as easy to get dated in auto repair as computer repair these days.

But he/she is a rariety. The average Autozone/Discount/what have you chain store counterman makes about $7 an hour, and you want to trust your diagnostics to one of them? They never say the problem is in this area, its this sensor needs to be replaced, when as Steve pointed out its a case of a sensor is reading out of range, and you need to determine why its reading out of range. The only thing in the tranny that remotely relates to "torque sensor" might be the torque convertor lock up relay or switch. But that usually causes one of two issues, ether it wont lock up the torque convertor, or more often, it wont unlock and the vehiscle acts like you forgot to push the clutch in at the light when you come to a stop. In severe cases it acts liie a locked up engine when you try to start it. Ford was famous for that back in the early-mid 80's.

I am taking it to this shop, because it close to where I work. They have a full diagnostic computer, that tells them they have to check each sensor via. voltage like u say. He told me to try the speed sensor first, the other day. There was a error then no error, back and forth like. Then we went online help and read how to check each sensor. The sensors trouble notes explained general stuff like trans. trouble, with the speed sensor. I went and bought this sensor myself and replaced it. 25.00$ for the sensor. That didn't work. I will take it back to them in the morning to check the other sensors. I hopes it's a sensor like the shift sensor. When this happens. It wont shift right and not go into 1st gear, even if I put the shift down to 1st it wont go, it will only go down into second. Then it wont feel its in park to let the key release. It will go into park and I can turn motor off but no key release.

Yeah and I've seen $75 an hour mechanics who knew less than the parts counter guy. The price you pay is no guarantee of receiving good or smart advice.

Well I went to the Goodyear and waited until 8:30 a.m. for the one guy to show. It was suppose to be 8:00. Then I went to Chevy dealer for a 80.00$ diagnostic, They told me the ignition switch. That made sense to me, The switch wasn't powering the trans, so I had then change it. I was tired of messing with this truck. 461.00$

P.S. I switched out a ignition switch myself from a junk yard 5 months ago for this truck stalling on me. The Dealer wanted 240.00$ for the new switch, I thought it was to much. I spent 100.00 on the junk steering column

CHECK THE MLPS, aka PRNDL switch on the side of your transmission..aka 4L60E.

4 forward gears L ongitudinal transmission 60 series E lectronic

CHECK THE SHIFT LINKAGE .....ON.....the tranny, make sure it has NO...looseness when shifting through the selector ranges.

why??? CUZ I TOLD YOU TO......that's why!!

AND......... GIVE ME THE FK'N CODE LIKE I ASKED FOR!!!!! and i'll try to give you what you need. (give a little..git a little..givuh lot.....gitta lot)

anywhooo....... as a side note....... pulling that suckah down into manual low overides the computer..and FORCES...1st gear starts....... jest a tidbit i picked up during the "big war".
