Spare tire hoist

May 26, 2006 2 Replies

I tried to lower the spare tire from my 2000 GMC Yukon/XL this afternoon, and the hoist no longer works. It feels like the female square drive on the extension is engaging the hoist drive OK as I have some resistance when I rotate it either way, but the tire does not budge. I'm assuming I'll need to get a new hoist, no big deal, but first I need to get the tire out of the way. Anyone know any tricks to get out of this bind?

All advice welcome...

GM's first solution for this problem was to deflate the spare tire before lowering it. When they finally realized that most people need air in the spare if they are trying to lower it they sent a letter telling owners to try to lower the spare and order the flexible extension if they couldn't. This didn't happen until a few years after the dealers had been told there was a problem.
