Temp sensor?

Have a 1998 GMC 1500 with the 5L v8.... Did a bunch of coolent/gasket work on it a few months ago, and managed to snap off the connector to the engine temp sensor, was able to pop it back on and secure wiht a wiretie, worked fine for a while, then had to build up a ball of solder on the sensor to keep the connection (It takes five hands to actually solder the wire to the connector, four hands wasn't enough! I'm going to be driving from Phoenix to Dallas here in a couple weeks and really want to be able to see how hot/cool my engine is running... something about pickup trucks, long drives, hottern'hell temperatures, and a bit ass desert. It keeps popping off again, and I can't get it to stay connected now for more than a few speedbumps. However I can not find this damn part anywhere I look, nor can I spot it in the Chiltons manual(for what its worth). Anyond have a partnumber I can look up somewhere? Looks like a simple part to replace, drain the relevant fluid down, remove the old, install the new, redo the connections, and refill the fluid. But i have no idea what fluid the probe is sensing, is it coolent or oil? Ive heard oil, but its not down in the oil pan, its on Driver side, above the exhaust manifold, bout a third of the way back from front of engine, seems like a better place to get a coolent temperature instead. Ideas? Comments?

Coolant temp sensor Wells part number SU109 Temperature switch Wells part number TU230

from Napa Echlin Ignition Coolant Temp Sensor ECHTS4052 Delphi Engine Management Coolant Temp Sensor DEMTS10075

And its measuring engine coolant temp. Wells part numbers were found in

2 minutes on Autozones web site, Napa part numbers took about the same time If the enigne is cool, you shouldnt have to drain coolant, work fast, when its hand loose you should be able to unscrew the old and insert and screw the new one in with out loosing a pint. Do not over tighten when you get to the wrench point.

Went and picked up the part, had the parts store look it up as well.. What came out of the box is a Temp sensor with two wire connector, what i have is a single wire on the one in my truck coming down from a dual wire delphi connector. The sensor came with an "adapter" and instructions to connect ground to ground, hot to hot, the wire from the truck is a single black wire, wires on the "Adapter" are a black wire, and a yellow wire (dephhi connector). So i connected black to black... nothing, followed it back up to the connector on the truck, and its a single BLUE wire on the truck... so i'm guessing i need to undo my black to black connection, and go to black to yellow instead.... guys at both parts shops i went to were stymied by this (autozone and checker), and i want ot get the boards opinion before i cut, strip, recrimp, re shrink tube etc etc etc.... Ideas? (amazing how a five minute job has turned into such a pain in the ass)

Did you specify gauge or light? Ask them if it shows one for a temp light, one for a gauge.....

Got it resolved, The parts out here at checker and autozone were just generic parts, they had no other PN's for gauge only applications, so that ten dollar part ended up costing 35 bux at the Chevy house down the road. Chevy house had something like 4 part numbers on file for that model truck, brought them out and I picked out the one that goes in my truck. Now to hope the other guys accept the return of the one that wasn't appropriate... after it was installed in the truck, doubtfull but worth a shot. Replaced the part the other morning and it worked flawlessly the second I plugged it in.
