whiny transmission

i have a 1994 1\2 ton one wheel drive truck,automatic chevy that is and i have a whining sound when in gear and moving , also it hisitates when put in gear before it ingages , how long? and whats wrong ?,

Sounds like you need to check the fluid level in the trans,do a service if due and cross your fingers. Whining can be caused by air mixing into the fluid which can happen if the level is low and air is sucked uo the intake tube. A blocked filter can cause this too,(as in an old TH400 with the fabric filter,not so much with screen type "filters"). A whine can also come from a pump going bad or a torque converter going out. Start with the fluid/filter.

Oh,and the hesitation is caused by either low fluid/blocked filter or hardened seals in the valve-body which lessens the pressure available to function properly,thus the delay. Again,check fluid level and service the trans if due,

Is the fluid reddish or brownish? Does it have any odor? How many miles on that trans? BrianA
