2004 Pacifica and synthetic oils.

I just changed my oil to 10w-30 Mobile 1.

I was thinking of changing the transmission and transfer case to synthetic as well. Anyone else with a Pacifica done the same? Any problems? Recomendations?

TIA.

If Owners manual states ATF+4 for the trans, stay with ATF+4, or risk damage or weird operation like TC shudder not covered under warranty. Most, if not all, Chrysler automatic transmissions are designed around ATF+4.

If the final drive and transfer case use standard 80W or 90W gear oil, can't hurt.

Factory fill in the Pacifica transmission is ATF+4. NEVER use any other type fluid unless you want to rebuild the transmission for fun.

Thanks, Mike...

Owners Manual says the following:

Automatic Transmission - Mopar ATF+4 Type 9602 Automatic Transmission Fluid.

AWD Power Transfer Unit - Multipurpose Gear Oil SAE 80W-90 meeting API specification GL-5.

AWD Overrunning Clutch - Mopar ATF+4 Type 9602 Automatic Transmission Fluid.

AWD Rear Carrier - Multipurpose Gear Oil SAE 80W-90 meeting API specification GL-5.

I'll check out synths for the AWD Power Transfer Unit, and rear carrier. Thanks again. Will leave tranny and Overrunning Clutch alone per the manual. Don't need TC probs or others!

I believe ATF+4 is a synthetic fluid. Regardless, I wouldn't use anything else in a new Chrysler transmission. (Or an old one for that matter). LH differential units have a service warning not to use synthetic gear lubricant. I would be sure your AWD units do not have a similar warning in the service manual before using synthetic lubricants.

Factory manual says I can use synthetics in the crank case. (at normal drain intervals with filter) The section regarding the Trans, specifically mentions use other than "recommended fluid may cause deterioration in transmission shift quality and/or torque converter shudder". Oh well...thx

Does anyone know why that warning is there? Bad reaction with ATF+3 or

+4 if it leaks past the seal between the diff and the tranny? I've always been curious.

The Pacifica drivetrain is standard Chrysler hardware, with the standard Chrysler recommendation: follow the factory recommendations in your owners manual. Anything else could destroy your transmission, at your expense not theirs.
