Fiat pursuing Opel, Vauxhall, Saab

The BBC World News this morning reported that Fiat is trying to buy GM's European operations -- Opel, Vauxhall and Saab.

Does this mean that Fiat could get some GM technology that could be used in Chrysler vehicles to compete with GM itself in North America?

It depends if the patents and suchlike are included in the sale. Automakers take out hundreds of patents for the stupidest little things. Usually in these kinds of sales the patents are cross-licensed.

So yes, Fiat could get GM technology that could be used to compete with GM at the same time that GM gets Fiat technology that could be used to compete with Fiat.
