By the same token, not all that you read is false. I'm sure much of the content in the glossy mags is legit, they do after all have to answer to their readers as well as their advertisers. If all they were doing was writing ad copy then who would buy it? As far as car companies buying favorable reviews, I'm sure it happens. I'm just not sure it happens all the time.
........... but the cynics like DTJ, Stern and Whiting will always refute that because they believe there is never any truth in the printed media.
