LeBaron GTX ?

Nov 06, 2005 2 Replies

Hi,

Today I picked up a 1989 LeBaron Convertible that is badged on the doors and trunk as a GTX Turbo. It has a 2.5l intercooled and AT floor shift. Badging does look factory, but I'm not familiar with any model other than GTC or GTS. VIN looks normal: 1C3XJ45JKGxxxxxx.

Anyone familiar with this? Could it be a dealer promo?

Thanks, Fred

H'mm. Something doesn't quite add up here. There was no *intercooled* 2.5 turbo sold in North American FWD Mopars. A few different intercooled 2.2s, but not 2.5s. The VIN is coded for a 2.5 Turbo I engine ("J" in the 8th digit), which is a non-intercooled turbocharged 2.5. Probably a previous owner added the intercooler; the factory 2.2-intercool parts would drop right in.

There should be no "GTX" trim level or submodel in a J-body ('87-'95 LeBaron coupé/cabrio), so my guess is someone added the badging on a whim. Post a picture or two?
