PT-What are these switches for???

If you have the alarm system, I believe that the 2001 system included a hood switch. It was not continued through 2002.

____Reply Separator_____ Nope, no alarm system. Unless you count the panic button on the keyless entry keychain pod.

If you have a keyless entry system, you also have a factory alarm system.

alarm system, the '01 had it and this '04 has the switch as well, the alarm system also has an "idiot light" next to the stereo (but I can't remember where it was on the '01)

was this car bought new or aftermarket?

sounds like the previous owner had an alarm installed?

is this the pin switch near the rear of the engine compartment? if so it is indeed for the factory alarm.

In 2002 the led that indicated the alarm system is on, is in the middle of the fuel/temperature guage. When the alarm system is activated, the led flashes slowly.

Well, this switch is turned on, and I can do anything I want to that car when it's locked and there is no beep, no siren, no anything to indicate an attempt to open a door, the car has been bumped, etc..

so it's not just a push switch that closes when the bonnet is opened?

You are obviously British. I had a 1953 MG TD once and the operators manual that came with it. I recall that the bonnet was the hood, and the hood was the top. I also recall the words used for starting the car: "Pull starter knob out smartly and release immediately engine fires."

try this, with a freind push down on that button, using your remote lock all the doors.

release that pin switch, what happens?

also observe the red led in the dash, if its the switch near the firewall its for the factory alarm, read your owners manual.

Well, yes. But we have moved on a bit. There are one or two cars with ignition key starters. We still have 'bonnets' rather than 'hoods' but some of us even drive PT Cruisers these days! ;-)
