You don't say which make alternator, but I have found that several
auto-electrical specialists will stock regulators, though I must admit I
have not looked recently. Last time all I wanted was a pair of brushes, but
I had to buy the regulator as well as it was all one part. As you can get
exchange units, the parts must be available.
Certainly the fault you describe points to the regulator, but it "could"
just be a broken wire in the sensing feed to the reg. which would possibly
be inside the unit.
Don't know where you are, but have you looked in your local Yellow Pages
under Car Electrics.

so looks like the best avenue for me now is to get the I.D numbers off my
alternator and get in touch with gsf
guy on that forum said £19 for a reg/brush assy which is less than my local
scrappy wants for a bosch one off a 106 1.1 (he wants £30 btw)
it at first seemed to be account only so i emailed them
got a reply today about it and have emailed graham with my needs
btw i did ring GSF but they dont do one for my model only citroen reg they
do is for the deux cheveux
