Electrical issue-97 Jetta

Help people please

97 Jetta GL...Just replaced defective battery..Battery was dead( was 7 years old) I have 14.4 volts coming from ALT. to new battery so it looks like the battery is charging ok..

The problem now is when I come to a stop the car will struggle and stall. Especially if I have rear defroster on, lights ETC. It will start back up fine...Any help would be appreciated..

Thanks Joe Orapello

You say you have 14.4 V going to the battery, is this at idle or at some other RPM? Try measuring at e.g. 2500 RPM and see what voltage you get. If the voltage goes above 15 V as you raise the RPM it means your voltage regulator is broken. The most common fault mode for a voltage regulator is to full-field the alternator. A full-fielded alternator will deliver as much power as it possibly can, and will thus be very heavy to drive.
