In this week's Autocar (the one with the Mazda RX-8 roadtest) , they introduce their new fleet car. An SD1 Vitesse in red that they paid £750 for..

Yup. Two-tone red, though. ;-)

Dunno what they're on - they reckon there's no need to rev it beyond 2000 rpm. Mine is somewhat off cam at under 3000...

I'd guess the cam is clapped.

Isn't this the normal state of affairs for the Rover V8 ? Head gasket is blowing on the inlet side, and the cam is clapped, but they still keep grinding on.

They seem to go for ages with virtually no lobes on the cam, it's only when you have trouble overtaking an 1100 Fiesta that you suspect something is wrong... Hydaulic tappets are sometimes a bad idea!!

And they usually idle better and have more extreme low speed torque with a worn cam. Until it finally goes becomes round. ;-)

In that you don't hear it happening? I'd say those who let it get to this state would just ignore the noise anyway.
