early registration numbers

I'm selling a car and a few people have asked if the reg is the original, the car was registered in 1954 and has a reg with three numbers followed by 3 letters, but quite a few cars from this era seem to have three letters followed by three numbers. Does this mean mine has been changed? Would there be anything on the registration document to indicate this?Thanks

And this expat remembers my Grandfather's car (after WW2) that was a pre-war Vauxhall, FGF 81, my Father's Hillman Minx (late '40's or early

50's) LYY 397, and his '54 (or there about) Vauxhall Velox, OYW 756, that he sold when we left the UK in 1956. I have recently acquired a 1962 Super Minx Mark 1, that needs a fair bit of work, and will be registering it (when the time comes) on "Antique" plates. I would dearly love to have appropriate "English" plates on it also. I will be over in the UK late September / early October. Any suggestions?

Another look at the list.

F with numbers after Essex Jan 1904 to March 1915 F with numbers before Feb 1957 Not sure of the end date but it says the entire range was issued.

Essex weren't alone. Kent D July 1964 Staffordshire E April 53 and June 58 London H June 53 Liverpool K April 60 Manchester N June 59 Derbyshire R Nov 62 Leeds U May 57 Sheffield W March 60

Again I have no end dates and have no ideas what caused the flurry of activity. maybe the mayor got a new car and they wanted a posh reg for it.

Feb 1957 to Apr 1958 according to the Motor Trader Handbook 1961
