air cleaner -- replace filter element

this is one of the standard maintenance proceedures for an a4 at 40k miles.

i feel like this should be easy enough to do myself, even though i'm a novice to diy car repair.

anyone have any advice as to what to do, what parts to buy, or online resources that take you step by step through the process?

I don't think that should take you more than a few minutes and maybe one hand tool. You didn't say what vehicle you have, but the local autoparts store or quick oil change outfit probably has it in stock and you probably don't need anything put the filter.

If this is a Dodge engine, then its easy as pie to replace the air filter. All you do is unscew the top off of the breather, lift it up and take the filter out, if its an older engine. Newer ones have a box, just pop the latches off and you have it.
