Replace Cat Converto - 98 Dakota

The Catalytic converter on my 98, 3.9L Dakota needs to be replaced. The ceramic must have come loose inside and it is rattling to beat the bear. I'm not getting any faults yet, so I guess it is still working but I can't stand the rattling.

Thinking about buying a Catco direct replacement and putting it on myself. Looks fairly simple, however I've not done one. Anyone done one of these who can comment on whether it is as simple as it looks or best left to a muffler shop.

Thanks

Frank

find out if your dodge dealer will replace it for free. I just got a letter here in ontario, canada from dodge saying that if mine fails the etest they will replace the cat for free. mine is a 99 dakota, had the cat replace about 2-3 year into owning it. the letter says the warranty period has been extended to dec 30,2006 or 10years or

200,000km, which ever is later. in addition it says if i fail the e-test before dec 30,2007 due to defective cat or abd test with cat effieciency cod the cat will be replaced free of charge.

too bad they won't extend it to the crappy bolts holding the exhaust manifold on.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I checked a few months ago and at that time it was eight years or 80,000 miles. I was just over on both. But maybe it has been extended.

And the answer is:

They have extended it in the U. S. for ten years or 120,000 miles. However, my VIN number does not show up on the list even though the EPA press release says that models from 1996-2001 are being replaced. Chrysler refuses to tell me why mine was excluded.

The EPA press release was very specific about the failure mode and that is exactly the way mine has failed.

I'm pressing forward put pushing the big Corp bureaurcracy along and don't expect much.

Thanks, anyway for the heads up on the extension.

My '98 Dodge Dakota Sport, was also making that horrible rattling noise, and my dad and I who drive the truck, dealt with the noise for months. So finally today my dad took it to a shop who said that the insides of the CAT were all broken up, and they said they could replace the CAT with one that won't pass smog, for way cheaper than the right one. So my dad did it. They said it isnt an OBDII or something. And they said that if we need the truck smogged to take it back to him and he will smog it. Does this sound wierd or what?? And, they checked our Check engine light and got the code P0422. Anyways, let me know please, Trisha..........

If you can live with braking the law. Then your fine if not get the correct cat put on. Code P0422 / Catalytic converter efficiency failure / Check exhaust manifold for cracks or replace catalytic converter. If you have the wrong cat this code will be back.
