2002 Model differential

My 2001 2WD, 4D,v-6 Explorer with 53,000 miles has been exhibiting signs of problems with the rear differential; minor fluid leak and noise on driving. When I took it to my regular shop they said take it to the dealership as it had signs of metal shavings in the casing and need special tools to dismantle it, its a 2002 model.

Is anyone aware of any recalls or known problems with the early model 2002s?

50k miles of easy, flatland driving seems very low for a differential failure. This unit was a complete redesign from the earlier floating axle system on the 1992 - 2001 Explorer to allow for independent rear suspension.

Maybe I won't sell my '97 after all!
