I recently bought a new 2003 XLT. For the past 4 years, I ve had a 96 XLT. Loved it! And love my 2003 XLT (got it 3 weeks ago) The only problem that I had with the 96 was with the computer system, namely the oxygen sensors. I needed all 4 of them replaced. Just curious, were the oxygen sensors a common problem with the 96 XLT? Thanks!
O2 sensors wear out, and lose their ability to, well SENSE !
They'll wear out on your '03 also. (in time) but the fact that they needed replacement isn't a defect.
What IS common is that one of them goes, and sets the code, but the mechanic replaces all 4 of them regardless of their condition.
Not saying that is a BAD thing to do, but it sometimes gives people the impression that they are faulty if all 4 of them could fail at the same time.
Me, being cheap and all, replace them as they fail :)
My 96 XLT V8 set a code due to an supposed O2 Sensor - code was P0153 - slow response or something but the Ford mechanic said it was not a sensor problem. The software version in the onboard computer had been updated several times due to bugs and my software was an old version. He flashed the cpu and the code went away (charged $50 Canadian for this) - there was nothing wrong with the O2 sensor - the cpu had a software bug which would occasionally set the code for no reason. I think he said it was a problem only with the 5.0 engine.
