2002 wheel lock cover

Help please! My grandson needs new tires on his 2002 XL Explorer and the tire place can't find the key for the wheel covers. They plan to "cut it and make a new one", or so my grandson says.

Is this key in a special hidden place?

Is it ok for the dealer to "cut it"? I'm assuming cut the locking mechanism.

Thanks so much for your help. Betty

Sorry about that, I obviously don't know what I'm talking about, I'm just trying to prevent some tire place from doing something that shouldn't be done. Thanks again, B

Wheel covers on an Explorer?? If you mean wheel locks the key, which resembles a medium steel socket, could be located in the rear jack compartment (with the lug nut bar), under the hidden panel by the back seat where the spare tire lowering rods are stored, or even in any other glove/center console compartment.

I think you figured out what we were looking for, even if we couldn't call the name correctly. Thank you, going to look for it now. Betty

Just a word, Betty.... if the tire shop (the people that take wheels and tires off for a living) don't know where to find a lugnut key, is this the shop I want to take my car to? This is, of course, if the owner hasn't done something "odd"....
