Air duct volume seems to decline from initial start to almost nothing through all fan settings.

Compressor runs and air is cold.

Capacitor? Fan motor?

If you live in a humid part of the country this could be caused by low freon making the evaporator ice up. The ice blocks the airflow. Next time it happens turn the AC off and just run it on vent, do NOT touch the fan speed, and see if air volume returns over a 5 or 10 minute period as the ice melts.

While working with it this morning, it seems that the compressor is not cutting off.

Crap in the air ducts? Twigs, Leaves, bugs, mouse nest ( had one of those in mine after a visit to the shop )? Cars used to be made with a small screen in the air intake to catch most of the larger stuff, now it's just an louvered grate.

Perhaps the low pressure switch has gone bad. If the compressor doesn't shut off when it's supposed to that also can lead to evaporator ice because it will allow it to get too cold. Out here in Phx " too cold" isn't really much of a concern this time of year.

I replaced the low pressure switch, but the compressor still does not cut off.

It is R-134 converted system. Compressor makes slight ticking sound. Pressure was high, so I let off a little to bring it into normal range. Compressor still does not cut off.

Thank you for your replies.
