97 SOHC serp belt problems

I changed the belt a few weeks back, now it's started squealing just as I start the engine but then it stops. I removed it and degreased the pulleys, but that didn't help much. Funny, it never ever made a sound with the old belt. It is a Ford belt, not aftermarket.



While doing this I discovered the idler pulley at (about) top center wobbles slightly and isn't particularly "smooth" when I turn it by hand. Is this normal? I assume not, but before buying a new one I thought I'd ask around.



I have the original tensioner, which evidently has been a lot of trouble for many, but mine seems to be OK.

Hadn't thought to wash the belt, but maybe I should. Might have some residue from the belt manufacturing - don't know if they are molded someway, but it they are some of the releasing agent could be on the surface I guess.

My '00 SOHC has squealed on every cold start since I bought it two years ago. The Ford serpentine belt is good and there is no residue on the pulleys. The local Ford tech has given it a clean bill of health. I guess it's just an Explorer idiosyncracy that you have to live with.

Nah, it was fine for 6 years. There's more to it than that. I wish I hadn't thrown out the old belt. It would be nice to put it back on and see what happens.

My Dodge truck's belt squealed on cold damp mornings, so I juiced it up one night with Krylon belt dressing. It quieted right down, until... the next morning it absolutely shrieked! For 8-10 miles it sounded like super-sticky duct tape being ripped off a roll, nonstop.
