MAF issues

I was going to take my MAF off and clean it today. However, both star screws have a plastic coating that is proving to be very difficult to remove without damaging the head of the screw. '98 Mountianeer, 5.0, AWD. Any suggestions? Thanks, Steve

I had similar situation with my '97 4.0L OHV. I managed to get to it through the air cleaner duct and left the MAF in place.

I've always found ViseGrip pliers very handy in situations like this. They're almost as useful as Duck Tape.

Bob, Ulysses, thanks for the response. Any idea why the tamper proof plastic was put there in the first place? Steve

Are you using a Torx T20 bit with a hole in the center?

Thanks for the response Al, yes, I am using the correct bit. My problem being, I can't clean the damn plastic out of the head to insert the screwdriver. I think small needle nosed vice grips will probably be the correct answer to this problem. Steve

I used an awl to scrape out the plastic filling, then just used the appropriate security bit.
