Need advice re 98 XLS

As a satisfied owner of a 1993 Explorer with over 200,000 miles - I'm considering the purchase of:

1998 XLS
100,000 miles
2X4 V8 (would prefer the V6) Auto trans D4 rear axle (3.73 posi?) Exterior & power leather interior are clean. Tires show even wear Appears to have been well maintained. . .

Had PCM part # F8PF 12A650 DNB installed by Ford dealer May 2003.

With *reasonable* driving (flat interstate 75 mph) what kind of mileage can I expect?

12mpg - 14 mpg - 16 mpg?

Hope to drive this vehicle another 100,000 miles - what can I expect to replace?

Change the usual fluids. . . Replace transmission? (this one shifts smoothly, but I will do *light* towing from time to time) Front suspension A arms? V8 exhaust manifolds? Replace timing chain & gears?

What tends to go wrong with this vehicle setup?

Hey AZGuy, Why not consider a newer model V8 (2000)? You'd probably be able to buy one for under $9K loaded with around 40K miles. You'd get an extra 60K miles on the fella to boot! With the market the way it is, you'd do well to shop around (if you haven't already). The V8 is bulletproof, and the mileage is not that bad. I get 16 in town and 18-19 on the highway on my '99 v8 w/82K miles.

Best of luck to you in your hunt...
