O/D on/off

My overdrive button doesn't seem to work anymore. Generally when starting the vehicle defaults to having o/d but I drive in the city a lot and it was recommended to me that I turn o/d off when driving in the city under a certain speed. I was wondering what was causing this problem. It seems like sometimes it will come on when I shift it into drive after I back out of the driveway. Sometimes I just have to push it a few times before it comes on. This is on a 96 exp.

Sounds like it is in the switch. That would be the cheap part to fix. As for the recommendation that you turn off OD in city. That's bunk. OD on is the NORMAL driving position.

OD can be turned off as a preference if you are in bumper to bumper traffic on a highway and you are annoyed by it switching into OD back and forth. That would occur if you are hoovering around the 40-50 mph range.

OD should be turned off when towing. (Personally I still would not turn it off if the load is only 500-700 lbs.) The reason you are instructed to turn it off for this is the overdrive is a positive lockup up with pins that create a solid connection to bypass the torque converter. These pins cannot take the shocks that occur with a heavy load during towing.

Unless you tow, then your normal position is OD on.
