hey there. well, i just bought a used '97 ford explorer with 87k. i discovered the same problem with the fuel as well. so, i installed a new fuel, oxygen sensor, plugs and wires, and K & N air filter. the vehicle runs a lot smoother now. i would suggest a new oxygen sensor or a new fuel filter. Along with a new air filter and plugs and wires. good luck.
