Rear E-Brake

Recently did a brake job on my 96 XLT 4x4. When I took the rotor off the rear right assembly, it was real difficult like the e-brake shoes were expanded in the drum, but the e-brake was off. I looked behing the hub and noticed the cable was OFF the actuating lever, (which explains why my e-brake pedal goes to the floor from so much slack)

I was able to pull the actuating lever OUT of the dust boot from the backing plate. No clip or anything was keeping it in. On the other side, I couldn't do this, it was firmly in place. I put the cable back on the lever, but inside the e-brake drum assembly the lever would not stay in place and I couldn't find where it would be clipped or snapped into place.

I am looking for my Chiltons now, but they show a lot of pre-1995 models in their examples (unless the brake assemblies are the same)

Any help would be greatly appreciated on how this e-brake lever stays in place.

Thanks!

Ian, My book says 1995 and later models are alike, so pre-1995 model information won't work. Perhaps your cable anchor is off the cable? Or the cable itself is worn and broke at that point? The only info I could find about the inner assembly is that the arm that is pulled by the cable is attached by a pin. But if this pin is broken, you should have noticed this upon inspection.

Any more knowledgeable people out there have more info................ Jim
