Torque Converter clutch won't stay locked up

94 XLT with the 4ALD automatic with 185K, but completely rebuilt trannyabout 10K ago. Lately strange things with torque converter lockup. Itusually works normally, with lockup right at 45 mph, and in and outlike it should depending on load. If I stay under 55 or so, it is fineall day. If I get on the highway and cruise at 70 or so, it unlocksafter about four or five miles, and then won't lock again - period,even if at lower speeds (but over 45). After a long shutdown, it againworked fine. This happened daily, whether warmed up to normal or not,but refused to do it for the tranny shop fellows after they fought withit for a whole day. So I took it home and it's doing it again. Lately,sometimes it doesn't lock at all when starting out in the morning (coldMichigan winter), so it's become less predictable and moreintermittent. I assumed it might be something electrical (badconnector, etc.) but now it seems to be something sticking in theclutch activation mechanics. Do you think an additive might help, andthen a drain, filter, etc. thereafter might help? Or is there somethingspecific I should be looking for? Thanks.

This thread is 16 years old, when I was 2 myself! I just purchased a 1994 explorer for myself for my 18th birthday for 400 dollars, 129,000 miles back in September. I have since put 12,000 miles on it and I have had this exact same converter lock up ever since I got it. I will be replacing the MAF sensor tomorrow, and I feel confident that will fix my issue. Thank you Craig! You have saved the day over a decade and a half after your own spell.
