1995 Tarurus SE Automatic Transmission Question

i just purchased a 1995 Tarurus SE and have a question about the automatic shifter. There are two drive positions, one with a circle around the D and another D setting beneath it without a circle. Why does this car have two Drive settings?

the circle around the D is overdrive

use that one for normal driving :)

Only one. The one with the circle, is overdrive or fourth gear enabled. At speeds under 45 it makes no difference, if you run in 'D' you lock out fourth gear above 45 MPH.

On the electronic AXOD/AXODE/AX4S & AX4N, 4th gear & lockup can occur as early as 35-36 mph.

If you run in "D" 4th is locked out no matter how fast you go. 4th can come in at speeds slower than 45, it all depends on engine load.

That is right actually... my 97 Taurus will engage O/D as early as 35-40 mph under very light load (IE going down a hill)... Always has, so does a friend's 96 taurus
