4.6 Bad Cylinder 93 Crown Vic

the second cylinder in on the passenger bank has almost zero compression---anyone experienced anything like this? are 4.6's known for this? any help and information will be appreciated. Need to decided whether it's a valve or rings, and if not rings, how best to go about repairing it. Thanks.

The biggest problem known on the 4.6L of that vintage is the valve seals which won't affect compression. Occasionally, a lash adjuster will collapse allowing a cam follower to pop out which will disable that valve and kill that cylinder. The cure is usually a new adjuster and put the follower back in. That can be done with a special tool after removing the valve cover which can be a real pain on the passenger side. If you get that far, you may as well just go ahead and replace the valve seals if you have that level of capability. You will need compressed air and an adapter to the plug hole to replace the seals unless you want to use the old rope trick which takes forever.

To my knowledge, this is -not- a common problem with 4.6 SOHC.

There are numerous folks in this group than can help to diagnose ... they may well need lots more info.

History (i.e. repair record) and present mileage? Heard any funny noises lately while driving car? Junior hasn't been trying to set a new 1/4 mile record down the parking lot whilst 2 quarts lo on oil, has he? Etc, etc.

Cheers, Puddin'
