new problem developed....

93 lincoln T.C.- 4.6 -150k - new wires and plugs - developed a loss of power and miss after it runs for anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour. clearly a heat related problem. checked fuel system - checked out ok. miss is not one sided nor an even miss, but misses on both sides, and is an uneven miss.

will fire on all cylinders until problem shows up. doesn't make any difference whether in city or on highway. the more you call for power, the more the engine buckles and jumps like you are turning the key off and on quickly(that kind of hard jerking)

it will idle as smooth as can be if you are at a stop. can take off like an old man at stop light.

has no trouble starting engine after it is turned off.

if on highway and going uphill, at the worse symptoms so far, have started at bottom of hill at 75 and finished at the top of hill at 49 mph.

when symptoms appear, have trouble holding highway speed and slowly decreases in speed.

symptoms started to appear over 700 miles ago and are getting worse.

if you stop and kill the engine and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes. problem will go away. symptom will show up after about 10 to 15 minutes on highway again.

symptom - starts loosing power slowly, but symptom gets worse the more you drive. haven't had a complete failure where engine stalls and quits running yet.

haven't put it on machine to get codes yet either.

just curious - i know on the 5.0, they had problems with the film on the distributor causing problems about cutting off on the ignition. since this does not have a distributor, i was thinking that i might have missed something that is routine that breaks down in the electrical system. a certain module or something.

thanks for any help or shedding any light on where to take it.

Still sounds like a fuel problem - what are your actual pressure readings when the symptoms appear?

hi rob - there was one piece of info that i left out that leads me to believe it is electrical in nature. for the past 50k miles, if i go over a section of road that is rough or go over a sharp bump, like a railroad track and the engine will lose power and cough and sputter, but will idle ok. only when this symptom happens, if you try to drive off from idle, the engine will buck, jump and if you push it, dies.

now, if you turn off the key, then you reset the computer and the engine will fire right up and run normal. and i might drive over those same railroad tracks a 100 times and the car will not miss a beat before it finally does it again.

it may go months and never do what i just wrote about and then it might do two to four times in one day.

but the symptom that i first wrote about is new. it never has started loosing power just driving down the road and turning the key off and resetting the computer does not change the symptoms now when it's happening.

i just put a new fuel tank in and fuel pump too about 4 months ago.

the pump kicks right on and pressurizes so that when i go to start the engine, it fires right up.

Did you have the codes read out?

Have you checked or replaced the fuel filter?

It really DOEs sound like a fuel problem.

Have seen a carbed car have same when fuel filter had crudded with large particles. No-flow, many drop off filter; When flow resumes, sucked to media again

I would have expected CEL to light, though, in that case. Complaint doesnt say that.

Could ALSO be bad cats ... again due to bad fuel. Those might NOT set CEL on that series, correct?
