No, positioning #1 piston at TDC with it's valves CLOSED is essential.. Find the mark on the Cam pulley, it should be at a corresponding mark, as well.

The BEST thing to have is an impact wrench to get the crankshaft pulley loose.

Once installed, rotate thru 2 complete turns with plugs out to insure you havent accidently gotten off one tooth.
