Smoking 302

Have a 77 302 that just stoped running, the only way it runs is with the choke held closed, and it dies out in about 1 minute, when it does run it smokes like hell, mostly white, fuel pump is ok, any sugestions?

if you find out what it is i have the same problem with a 4 cylender 10kw generator i got here....

check your high speed jets.... i was going to do that with mine but i give up

White smoke is water. Sounds like a blown head gasket or a massive leak at the intake manifold where it meets the heads. (There are water passages there) Pull the sparkplugs and crank it over. You'll likely have water pumping out of at least one sparkplug hole.

White smoke is also unburned gasoline. Since there is a tie in with the carb and the problem, why would you assume that a car that won't run has a blown head gasket? There's no cause and effect relationship. I would first check out the carb, and then look for a large vacuum leak, given that the car will only run with the choke closed.
