I have a 1991 Explorer with 4.0 push rod engine. Auto transmission and 4 WD. Intermittently when I come to a stop the engine will start to race when I pump the brake pedal it will dump to idle. I had a fuel regulator go out on me about 4 months ago. When that was replaced I didn't have any more problems. But last night when I got off the freeway it did it again. At the stop with the engine in drive the rpm was at 1200 at a full stop I shifted in neutral and with no load it raced to 3000 rpm. This time no pumping of the brake or gas pedal worked, so I put it back in drive and continued carefully to get it home. When I got to the next traffic light it idled normally.
Reading my explorer manual it talks about the Idle Air Control Valve could cause this. And I also read that the brake on off switch is part of this system too.
I was planning to check the IAC and the throttle cable for binding and cleaning the injector throttle valve. Does this sound like I might be on the right track?
