Flashing Overdrive light and harsh shift in 1995 F-250 Diesel Automatic 4x4 - what could cause?

I have the described truck (80K miles), and about 6 weeks ago, for no apparent reason, I suddenly began to notice a harsh shift (both up and down) from low to second. Then noticed the Overdrive on/off light on the shift lever was flashing. Took it to the Ford dealer - they 'cleared' an error code - I don't know what code - said it was OK. I asked what caused the error code, got the big shrug - could be let's change transmission fluid, filters, etc. So I did. All OK until this morning - suddenly, again - it's back!! Anybody have any experience with these error codes and what causes them to happen. I'll have to try the dealer again, but would like some idea of what's real.

WHAT CODE ???????????? (number)

Torque converter probably needs to be replaced. Sounds identical to my 97 F-350 Powerstroke.

Don't know the code number - tech said, however, was one he'd not seen before - whaterver that might mean! As an aside, the only common thing I can relate to these two instances is that I noticed both after I came to a stop, then made a 90 degree turn - a right turn on the original problem - and a left turn for the latest iteration. Appreciate the replies - and any other ideas.

try this:

Add a quart of fluid

Disconnect battery to clear codes (takes at least 30 minutes)

You might have a dispstick/tube mismatch that's giving a 'full' indication when it's low, and it's sucking air and slipping when you turn, ECM sees the slip, sets code, turns on light and makes it shift hard

I routinely over-fill E4OD's by at least one quart with no problems, since it takes over a quart to fill all three clutch packs (forward, direct, and OD) used in 4th gear

If you go back on this news group to April 13 /04 you will see a problem I had with the flashing o/d light , with some good info on what it could be . But make sure you contact Ford customer asst at

As a follow on - took the truck to the dealer today - they found the code (same code as the first episode) was 1728 - a slip fault. The tech took it for a test drive, but was unable to duplicate the problem with instruments hooked up. In thinking back, I think the problem arose after what seemed (to me) to be a kind of 'slow' shift at about

40 mph on a slight up-hill. By slow shift, I mean the shift seemed to delay until I decelerated a bit to 'aid' it. In talking with him, he thinks the most likely cause of the problem is in the front seal of the torque converter - he's suggesting I drive it for a few days and see if I can make the problem recur - but I most likely will have them check the torque converter seal. Does all this seem within the realm of logic to those of you familiar with this sort of thing? Many thanks to those who've offered advice.

there's no seal, 'front' or otherwise, in the converter

there is a seal in the front of the pump, which would leak fluid if it's bad

sounds like the ECM couldn't get the shift accomplished quick enough and set a code
