My vewy first TRUCK

Just bought my firstest-ever truck this week; 2000 Ranger XLT 4x4,

4.0L, level 1 off-road setup. I promptly subscribed to this group, and immediately learned that if it starts idling rough, I'd better check the brake lights. Weird, but hey, it actually makes sense, so I've already gotten my money's worth out of the group.

I picked this one out of the hundreds of 4.0L 4xs available for a number of small reasons, including the lumbar support (bad back), the condition (SUPER clean)....but once I got it home and was going through the manuals, I found the original sticker and learned it had the 4.10 LSD rear, and a 5-speed auto (I've always driven a stick, and didn't even stop to think about the number of speeds; I figgered an auto is pretty much an auto is pretty much an auto...). I'm certainly not complaining, but I am wondering, in light of the shorter rear end, is the top gear on the five-speed auto any taller than the top gear on the 4-speed? I didn't buy this ride for its great mileage, but I'm still wondering.

Also, anybody have any comments on Hidden hitches? I'm right on the edge of ordering one, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

I would suspect the 5 speed has an O/D. Not sure, but most likely. If you are turning fairly low rpm's on the road, it should be an O/D. Our

2001 van has an overdrive, but it's got a yellow light on the shifter handle to tell you it's on. You can turn it off...See any yellow O/D lights anywhere? MK

Only when I turn the O/D off. Presumably it's the same ratio in either trans?

You just answered your own question I think. If it does indeed have an O/D, no, the top gear "5th" ratio is not the same as the 4 speed, if the 4 speed is not an O/D. Normal top gear is 1.00. An O/D gear is usually in the .70 range. Not sure the exact ratio on that truck. Being you seem to have an O/D, your rpm's on the highway should be quite livable. MK
