Rear End Noise??

My 2001 SuperCrew is making a metallic "tinking" noise as I start to decelerate. It only happens once I touch the brakes but not really get on the brakes. It only does it once too. It sounded like it is coming from the rear end so I changed the fluid and added the fiction modifier like the owner's manual said, but that didn't help. If you put your foot on the brake and shift from D to R it doesn't do it, but if you put on the Emergency Brake only it makes the noise every time you shift from D to R. The truck now has 74K miles on it and I've owned it since it was new. I've never really pulled anything with it and the only thing I've hauled in it was my ATV and the typical stuff from Home Depot. So if you have any ideas I'm open for suggestions.

Thanks, Octo

My '99 SuperCrew Dually did the exact same thing for about 15,000 miles. I tried new rear end grease, new friction modifier, then switched to synthetic, with the friction modifier, when that didn't work I replaced all the u-joints.

None of it made any difference.

Then I remembered a service bulletin about my '95 Bronco.

I pulled the driveshaft back out, cut the clamps off the slip yoke bellows, pulled the shafts apart, installed a grease fitting, (zerk), greased the splines heavily by hand with red lithium grease, reassembled the driveshaft and put it back in.

I've had no problems and no noise since, and it cost me about 5 bucks. It also seems smoother on starts somehow.

Thanks Spdloader,

I've had the drive shaft off once before but didn't do anything except look at it and check the U-Joints, which seem to be in great shape. I'll try your solution and see if that will fix it.

I really love this truck but this little problem has been driving me crazy for a while.

Thanks again,

Lane
