removing crankshaft sprocket

Hi all.

I have an 83 ranger 2.3L on an engine stand. I need to remove the crankshaft sprocket so I can replace the front main oil seal.

Problem is there is a timing belt guide (that bolts to the engine block) that almost entirely surrounds the sprocket making it impossible to use a standard gear puller on the sprocket.

I can?t seem to locate a procedure for removing the sprocket. Chilton and Hayes gloss over this step - saying merely to remove it.

Does anyone know how to remove the crankshaft sprocket?

Thanks kpg

Worst case, break it off with a chisel. Easy to do, and the replacements are inexpensive.

as I recall the 2.3's in Escorts, it just slips off

the bolt in the end of the crank keeps the whole works on it

The crankshaft gear came off with just a little prying. All is well.

I know I need to lubricate the new seal.

What is the best lubricant for this? Regular Motor oil?
