'94 Astro blowing gauge fuse

My buddy has a '94 Astro, 4.3L. He's been popping his 20A gauge fuse like they're Tic-tacs. We've tried disconnecting the turn signal/cruise harness under the column (I read that might be the same curcuit) and it still pops fuses soon after switching to the run position, even without starting the engine. Before the fuse pops the speedo goes crazy and we even managed to blow a fusible link at one point, since replaced.

Checking for codes is useless as the CES light goes out with the gauge fuse. Besides, I doubt it'll tell us much of anything.

I'm thinking that we need to pull the gauge cluster and check for bad wiring or a bad ground, or possibly replace the cluster entirely. Is there anything else on that circuit that could cause our problems? Any other suggestions?

I think you need to get a wiring diagram and find out where the wiring from that fuse goes. Try your local library as they usually have a lot of auto service manuals.

Excellent advice. You may wish to splice in a circuit breaker, esp. if intermittent fuse-blowing hinders progress in following intuitive checks while following wiring diagram. Any suspicious connection should be warm-to-hot to the hand immediately following the click from the breaker. HTH, s
