Sit in a VW Jetta or a Passat or pretty much any of the BMW's to get an idea what a GOOD seat should feel like. While these seats may seem a little hard at first, they are much more comfortable over the long haul because they offer support for lower back as well as a decent amount of lateral support.
The problem with GM/Ford on their non sports car models is that they have kept the "living room couch, tufted pillow" approach toward seat design. This design should have went out with the land yachts of the 70's and 80's. This type of seat feels soft and nice for a short ride but does not offer any support for those longer trips and also tends to flatten out and sag over time which makes it even worse.
People used to driving land couches usually don't like the seats of the European cars at first, but once they get used to them generally they never go back to the couch seats again.
