"New Elantra"

I just bought a 2008 Elantra (11000 miles) and I have some questions. There appears to be a sensor in the middle of the dashboard. It looks like the sensor that my 2001 Prizm used to turn on the headlights when it got dark. The lights don't turn on automatically so what is the sensor for? The car does not have daytime running lights either - I thought it was required of all new cars. Also, I know the key has a chip that is required for the engine to start. Is this also required to operate the door lock? I tried to have a spare key "cut" and it won't work even though it looks identical.

Some models do have automatic lights and a sensor on the dash. Perhaps they put it on all of them anyway.

DRL are not required. GM cars have them and I think many Fords do. Canada requires them and Hyundai sold there are equipped.

Presuming you're in the U.S., your key does not have a chip in it. If the copy won't unlock the door, it's not a good copy.

If you have automatic climate control, the sensor in the dash is for that. If you don't have automatic climate control, it's probably just a blank where a sensor would normally be mounted.

I believe that my 08 Optima may use the same key blank as an Elantra, a HY15. I went to a locksmith and he did not have any HY 15s so he tried using some other blanks. He could et them open the door but not to work in the ignition. On my own I located a couple of HY 15 blanks and revisited the same locksmith. He had no problem getting the keys to work with using the HY 15 blanks.

My Optima also has a device that sits in the center of the dashboard near the windshield. As far as I can tell it has no function in my car. A KIA car salesman told me that he thought it was for automatic climate control.

After guessing that an 08 Elantra needed the same key blank as my 08 Optima I looked it up and found that the 08 Elantra needs a HY14NP blank.

They may be hard to find at locksmiths but they are available via Ebay.

Not on an Elantra, and not on the dash. An automatic wiper sensor is located on the windshield, but this isn't even available as an option on the Elantra, at least in the U.S.
