Feels good to drive away while the other person is waiting for a tow truck. I had a Elantra hit my 90 Wrangler in the rear. My hitch destroyed the front end of her car.

I got rear-ended 2x in the span of 12 months in my 96XJ.

When the cop came she asked where the victims car was - I pointed to my Jeep's slightly bent down bumper. My trailer hitch (ball not installed) creamed the lexus es 300.

The 2nd one was a cheap ford escape. It had so much plastic that I couldn't tell what was really screwed up.

Both times it bent my frame and amounted to about $5000 worth of damage. It was interesting to note that the insurance company said if it was $8000 then they would total my XJ.

I just missed being rear-ended by about an 80 year old man (either drunk or not supposed to be driving at night) the other night in my XJ. He almost swerved into me twice as I got past him, then I was stopped at a light getting the phone out to call the police (he already had scrapes down his drivers side, likely from side-swiping a parked car) as I watched him coming up behind me in the rear-view mirror and he wasn't slowing down He was stradling my lane and the right turn lane.... I managed to pull sideways into the crosswalk just in time to watch him miss me by about 12 inches and go right through the red light and get t-boned by a nice new GMC Tahoe. Everyone was OK (not the vehicles!) but I haven't heard from the cops yet if he was drunk or what. Told the Tahoe guy, "sorry man.... he was gonna plow into me but I got outta the way" I didn't really feel like getting rear-ended and pushed into a busy intersection. Guy had 2000 miles on his Tahoe, which was a replacement for an Escalade that he wrecked a few months ago when someone else pulled out in front of him. And I thought I had bad luck.

Thats the worst feeling... watching them coming right for you and having no control. Thankfully I was able to barely get out of the way.

Nothing quite as scary as being stopped and seeing an oncoming crash from behind you. I was #3 in line stopped for a school crosswalk full of kids, 12 inch curb to the right so there was no place to go. Looked in the rear view mirror and I see this lifted, bull barred, winch toting Ford bearing down with the blonde driver looking way to her left. She hit me at about 45 mph without ever touching the brakes. Pushed me into the car ahead of me and him into the #1 car in line. I had my foot on the brake and was braced up against the seat with my head firmly againts the rear of the cab when she hit. Put a 6 inch bow in the back of the seat and the cab, bent the front of the bed a good 3 inches, and twisted the brake pedal 90 degrees. My big mistake was having my hand on the shift - drove my elbow into my ribs and bruised them good - man, does that hurt and take time to heal! Oh, and I bit my tongue, which was probably the most immediately painful part.

Ouch. I can imagine the feeling knowing that its coming. I was lucky to be able to get out of the way, if there had been someone in the lane next to me I would have been screwed. Thankfully I was able to cut into that lane and get enough into the crosswalk for him to miss me.

That was an old Mazda B1600 - circa 1978 model or so. Had a ladder frame heftier than most full size pickups I've seen but that was back when trucks, even small ones, were considered work vehicles and not trendy rides. Not the greatest engine - needed all 4 gears and could have used one lower, 65 on the highway was a challenge unless I had a good tail wind but like the old beetle it got me there and back nice and cheap. If it had been the MJ, she would have mess up the tailgate a bit more but she would also have slid under a lot futher .

My 97 TJ was rear-ended, crunching both rear and front (pushed into car ahead) bumpers. I got $500 from the other guy's insurance. Bought new factory bumpers off eBay (take-offs for customizations, many available) for less than $100 and bolted them on myself.

Man, you're lucky. I got rear ended in my 02 TJ at about 15 mph and it tweaked the rear gate. Got that replaced and some minor bodywork. Had the pleaseure of beating up a rental car for a few days.
