I understand that in 79 is when they added smog controls to the 304 in CJ's and in 80 even more so. How can a non-engine-expert like me tell the difference visually between 78, 79, and 80 304's? What exactly did they add/remove/change? And if there is no easy way to tell, what is the hard way? Any diagrams around? What do these "smog controls" look like?

If it's complicated then I don't need to know all the details, but I just wondered the easiest way I can tell the difference between years just by looking. Of course anyone can add/remove a catalytic converter but I'm assuming there are some more notable characteristics to the different years of the engine.
You can't tell for sure other than jotting serial numbers down and checking with a book. As for the emissions you'll see the smog pump, air injection tubes, EGR etc etc.
