Adjusting the Choke on 1989 Wrangler

What 'kind' of 'new' carb is on it?

All of the Carter BBD's I have seen have an electric choke on them. This is a timer choke that goes off according to how long it sees 12 volts, not on how warm or cold it is.

They are a 'real' pain in the butt because they go off way too fast so you have to sit and let it warm up for a long time or flutter the gas pedal like crazy and 3 foot drive to avoid it stalling and seeming to flood out until it warms up.

All my friends and I have put manual cable chokes in. They are great, I can leave it on a 1200 fast idle with the choke 1/4 closed and drive away no matter the temp or timing. Once it is 'really' warmed up, I then can open it up.

I recommend you remove the air filter and watch the speed of the choke pull open while it warms up. I think you will find it opens too soon.

There are two other things that help heating it up faster. The air filter flaps shunt hot air into the carb from the manifold shield and there is an electric gas mist heater directly below the carb.

If in fact yours acts differently, then check the electrical connection on the choke for a corroded plug. The choke housing also can be rotated to make it run richer or leaner to a little extent. Most are set 2 notches rich I believe.

The vacuum choke pull off Bill is talking about must be working or you would have no cold idle, it would chug out fast.
