If the compression is good, the only thing left is the valves. You arrive at valve seals from imperical data -- if X is bad, then fix it, if X is good, then Y must be bad.

One more thing: very bad gas stripping the oil off the sides of cylinder wall. When one of my rigs sits up for more than a year it will come down with this disease. Fresh oil and driving and then the smoking goes away.
Change gas in tank. Change oil. Put 300 miles on rig in less than one week. Repeat until oil does not go bad for >500 miles. Also, make sure that you are not running too rich on the carb.
When you change the oil note how it smells - if it smells disgusting and has a gasoline odor then this might be your problem. Also check the scent of the gasoline. If it is >6months old then try this before tearing down the motor. It is embarising to drive a mosquito fogger for the month that this may take to put things right, but I have seen it work lots of times.
