Garvin Industries Wilderness Safari Racks

Has anyone used the TJ version, I need storage space and have heard these are some of the best made racks. I dont do any serious offraod angle stuff, so I am not concerned with overhead weight(within reason) Comments??

I have one & like it. The screw-down method of securing the swing-away prevents rattles but it's kind of a pain to have to screw and unscrew every time. Tip...Throw away the threaded long-nut assemblies for the holes you have to drill in the rear crossmember inboard of the frame rails. Rather, drop the fuel tank so you have good access to the inside of the crossmember and use nuts and washers on those bolts. It's not difficult to drop the tank.

OK I just re-read the subject, and you are talking about the SAFARI rack, not the swing away tire carrier. Oops.

Anyway, I was talking about the tire carrier. Don't have the safari rack.

I had a standard fixed Wilderness Rack on my 91 XJ. I would never recommend a Garvin roof rack to anyone - the finish is poor and the steel and hardward rust quickly. It might be ok for a desert climate. If cosmetics are irelevant to you, they are functonal and tough. And heavy. Your TJ will wallow in turns once you load the rack with gear.

A trailer makes a lot more sense to me.

I don't have either rack, but what I've see of the Top 5 Racks I was impressed. No tilting of the rack to take down the soft top.

If I were to get a rack, this is the best I've seen so far.
