Sure it was. Remember that during that era there were all sorts of cheezy little S*boxes cluttering up roads and freeways. In a truly inspired marketing move, AMC wanted to avoid the Gremlin being recognized as just another S*box, so they cleverly designed it to look like a S*box.
......and all this time I thought the Gremlin was just a really huge tennis shoe.
LOL!
I don't know....
I worked for the dept of highways and we were surveying a new overpass and heard a great noise coming up this 5 mile uphill. Whatever was racing was over the lip out of sight for a while.
Then up pops 2 sets of cherry's on 2 new RCMP 'chase cars'.
One was a Camaro and the other was a freaking Gremlin! These were fully marked cop cars.
The Gremlin wiped the Camaro's ass big time!!

To me, it looks like a Mitsubishi Endeavor dash. Or just like all the other "new" cars which use cheap plastic with that awful dull silver paint. Why some people like the current "cheap boombox" look, is waaay beyond me.
OTOH the outside shape grows on you. I kind of like the Jag looking headlamps. I'm just really sorry it got extended (what? 5"?) and not a bit of that went into more space for the rear passengers. What was Jeep thinking?

Hey Buddy! How do you get this car out of second gear?
So, Favorite Wife and I are watching the satelite. On comes a commercial for the 2005 Jeep GC. At the end of the commercial they say tune to channel 651 for more info, so we punch it up. Could not beleive it but there was a whole channel of nothing but people beating the hell out of new GC's. We are watching this and kinda getting into it for a while when Favorite daughter #2 upon being subjected to watching the Jeep channel by her parents exclaims, "I am the spawn of idiots!" I do not know how to respond to her about that.
John Welch did pass the time by typing:
Tell her about how too much tequilla can do that. :)
"shuddup or we will embarrass you in front of your friends" :-)
