Rubie Locker pumps!!!!

Finally crawled under my new 05Rubi recently and found that they put the locker pumps on the skidplate in front of the drain plug for the xfer case.... WTF..... Do I have to remove them to change the fluid? What if I wanted to engage the lockers in water? wouldn't the pumps suck water, if they happen to be in water? What were the Engs' thinking when placing the pumps there? Can I move them easily without voiding the warranty? holy jeepers Any thoughts?

They also 'forgot' to put a high water vent on the Jeep transmissions, so if you are in that deep, you are in big do do already....

I wonder if you could add a vent for the pumps? I pulled the stoopid button vent out of my tranny and added a steel nipple for a line I ran up by the battery to keep the water out when I take my CJ7 swimming.

They don't vent any of the transmissions. That is, they don't use the hoses like on the diffs and the tcase.

Well, it is a button vent. In theory the cap keeps an air bubble under it so water won't just pour in, but I have seen some, like on my T5 that are on the 'side' of the shift tower so there is 'no' seal at all, just a dust cover.

I have also seen a pile of Jeep transmissions full of water.....

On a related question...... With an automatic is your transmission safe as long as the fill tube in the engine compartment is above water?

This depends on your definition of "safe". Water can seep in as long as any of the seals or even gaskets are under water. It is not as bad as a manual transmission with no vent tube though.

I have seen some nasty brown sludge come out of a Jeep automatic that went swimming. It was on a CJ though.

Someone commented once that there was a button vent inside the bell housing on some trannys, I don't know what the new ones are like though.

Perhaps we will take a look underneath next week. If we see anything interesting we can snap some photos and post them

Yes, I think it is. They have a relief valve that lets air bleed out, but keeps water from coming in.

God damn it Bill, there is no vent hose on the transmission, Real Jeep or otherwise. There is a vent hose on the tcase, and each axle. I can't say for sure that there has never been a breather hose on the transmission of earliler models, but I know without any doubt that there is no breather hose on any transmission used after 1976, unless the owner of the vehicle made the effort to install one. The transmission has a small valve that lets gas out of the trans, and presumably is able to keep liquid from seeping in. Having a vehicle stall in deep water may be able to defeat the valve, but a simple water crossing should not present any problems.

Perhaps, but to the point and not beside it.
