Stupid radiator...

Ok, my half plastic half metal radiator has started leaking, at the top, all around, where the AL and plastic meet.

1998 TJ with the four-oh H.O.

  1. Any tricks to fixing it?

  2. Recommendations on a new one?

Joseph P did pass the time by typing:

Very hard to fix, it's a gasket held by crimped metal tabs but crimping them harder just makes more leaks. Never heard of anyone actually getting one of those to stay fixed. :/ It might be possible by carefully removing the side then reinstalling the old gasket with a thin skinning of permatex Hylomar HPF (super sticky RTV) on both faces of the gasket. But considering what loosing the radiator can do to an engine I'd suggest you go with a new one.

You could go with a three core solid aluminium one from radiatorbarn.com or similar vendor. Or go to

or

for an OEM replacement.

Check Google Groups, there has been a lot of discusson here in the past.

Thanks, I haven't googled this yet, but I don't remember any recent discussion, either. I don't think OEM is an option at this point, seems this design may be just as flawed as the exhaust? (see my next post...)

Bill, I know few things are "real," but I am not a "real" master, so if you could give me an actual opinion (that of which I hold in high regard) I would be most grateful. The whole seam, but esp. where the fan shroud is, is wet.

Through Radiator.com's online Q&A session, I got the following "radiator expert" responses after selecting "aftermarket":

"Yeah, I thought so, most Tj drivers request the 3 row. It's all metal, three rows, and with a lifetime warranty costs $199. With a one year warranty, it's only $179. There are two different possibilities depending on some options your Tj came with and whether it's an open or closed cooling system. Might be best to speak with our Jeep specialist, George, just to make sure you get the right one. He's here now at 1-800-598-5504 (it's a toll free number)."

...followed by:

"My name is Chuck but any of us can help you out. We're here now and the number is 1-800-598-5504 (it's a toll free number)."

There are undoubtedly others, probably including ones local to you, but these prices seem pretty reasonable.

Hey, Bob, in case you didn't know, that is an automated system. I used it already, got the *same* exact replies all

3 times, and identical to yours...what radiator place would offer customer service on a Sunday? Exactly...technology is pretty cool, though, eh?

Replace it, will only get worse.

What genious thought half plastic radiators were even an acceptable idea, much less a good one?

If you do the replacement, get a copper or aluminum one.

Are you as confused as I? It was via a "chat" line on their website, not a voice conversation...

I took mine out and took it to a radiator shop and for about $25 they recrimped it. It's been holding fine since then (about a year).

Yeah.....been there done that.........picked up the radiator approx 2 miles away from my house. Same owner - 2 shops (side by each). Cheaper if you go through the internet & a nice looking babe hands it to you, instead of a rather unclean mechanic if you walk into the other half.
