towing '95 Wrangler

I was reading somewhere that there are shackles that allow the attaching of a tow bar directly to them somehow...rather than attaching directly to the bumper..has anyone heard of this and if so, can you direct me to a picture, plans, or a web site...i am aslo interested in fabricating my own tow bar...any ideas or plans

thanks

Had a '95. Bought the shackle replacement and tow bar from Currie. Towed that little Wrangler behind my 40 foot diesel pusher American Dream for

50,000 miles from coast to coast and border to border. Over the rockies on i70 and i80 about 12 or so times too. Had two emergency stops with the coach's anto-lock air brakes working at the max too. NEVER a single issue. Nuf said about Currie stuff.

We have the tow shackles on our 93 Wrangler. The tow shackles mount the tow bar low on the towed vehicle, so the bar is aimed UP to the hitch. This means stopping is safer. We don't have to worry that the Jeep is going to climb into the bed of the tow vehicle. Plus the cleaner look. The jeep appears stock. Down side is you can't leave the tow bar in place, you have to take it off.

Since we have the smaller 2.5L, there is lotsa room in the engine compartment. So I built a mount to hold the folded tow bar. It goes everywhere the Jeep does. It can be towed by anyone, any time (as long as they have a hitch and wire outlet). Like my dad, her dad, fathers-in-law, brothers, friends, other jeepers...

I also installed a covered plug between the bumper and the grill. I have a pigtail wire setup so as to just plug the jeep into the trailer outlet on most any vehicle. Had to install two diodes, but now the jeep's brake/running/taillights/turn signals work from the tow vehicle. Very slick.

I removed the front bumper to the jeep and drilled two holes in the bottom near the frame mounting points and installed two stainless quicklinks. These are for the tow safety chains.

So, we have the tow bar under the hood, the chains and pigtail in a bag in the Jeep trunk and the Jeep looks stock, no extra lights, no bumper brackets. So the wife and I can go to places and leave at separate times. This weekend was a good example. We needed to be in The Big City for our daughter's birthday party on Saturday. Wife needed to be back home on Sunday and I had to be in another town on Monday. We towed her Jeep to TBC and unhitched. Had the party. She went home I went the other way. Yet the whole family went together.

I also have installed them on my project jeep.

Man... you have been working on that a loooooong time! It must have two years ago when we talked about installing the terra low in our 300's.

Longer than that. Life gets in the way from time to time. Ranching, soccer, wife wrecking our truck, hurricanes, etc.

Besides, painting each and every bolt takes it's share of time too ;^)

Perhaps. The difference is only about 2". It would take a lot of torque to rotate it under my 1 ton. Maybe in a rear-ending.

I remeasured this afternoon. The top of the tow-bar lifts 7/8 inch up to the hitch from the spring. Very close to level. Close enough for nearly nil leverage on my 99 F-350 Superduty 4x4 CrewCab Shortbed V-10 with a 2

1/2" lift. The truck is more center heavy than front heavy, with the Class 3 hitch, fifth wheel plate, tools and crap in the bed. I can live with it. I have emergency stop tested it, so hard as to kick in the antilocks, with the Jeep in tow. Body lean is minimal on the 7 heavy-duty leafs, so minimal in fact, a bed full of dirt (I mean heaping full) and three railroad ties lowers the back end less than an inch. Thanks.
