WTB: Willys Wagon

Hope I am not breaking any group rules here, if so, just let me know. I am in Southern California and I'm looking for a 49-63 Willys Wagon for sale. Year not as important as the shape the Wagon is in. I'd like to find one that is in fairly good shape, 4X4 and drieveable, not TOO far from Southern California (8-10 hours drive) and not rotted out. Would prefer one that's already been painted. Drivetrain mods (repower) or stock ok. My plan is to drive this vehicle while I work on it. Willing to pay well for a good Willys Wagon.

Thanks to the group in advance for any Web sites of private collectors/clubs that may focus on this particular kind of vehicle.

Howard;

Thanks for the great link, I saw this site the other day but was unaware of the ability to "register" and let folks know I am looking. Thanks for your quick reply and ideas, I'll have a look. Best of luck.

Saw a pretty damn nice one yesterday in Glenwood Springs, CO (western CO). Didn't stop to get a price, but it's sitting for sale at the Harley dealership. Probably a little farther than you are interested in looking but if you are interested, call them and I'm sure they'll heve the info.

Kevin;

Thanks for the great lead, I'll give them a call and see what they have to say. If it's a nice Willys Wagon a drive in the snow to go see it would be fun anyway - Glenwood Springs is the place where they have the hot saunas in the caves, right? Been there before.

Thanks again for the contact information, very kind of you. Have a great weekend.

An update for those that have been so helpful:

We have now looked at two Willys Wagons. One is in Orange County California, a '49. Solid body, totally original paint. Has a Chevy V-8 in it and some axle/Dana changes. This one was priced at $6000.

The second one we have looked at is in Northern California, and was mentioned in this thread. A lot of work done on it, a Chevy 6, frame off resto. Very nice but not very original either. $10,000 USD for this one.

As we look at the various Willys Wagons out there we are refining what we are looking for, and getting a better idea of what is available. Some of the repower stuff has been well done, some could have been better thought out. We are beginning to lean toward more of a "Stock Body and Interior with drivetrain modifications" definition of our search.

Thanks again to all who are being so helpful, we thank you and will keep you aprised on our progress.

It's OK for some people to post links to businesses but for others it's Not OK.

Did you think different?

Are you just brain dead or did you never learn to read?

Well, you 'must' know how to read seeing as you are posting here.....

Here is a link to the newsgroups Charter.

If you are link impaired or if you want, I can post the words here.

I promise I will type them 'really' slow so you don't miss anything.

Ted Azito did pass the time by typing:

My two cents...

A business link posted as a reply to a question isn't spam, it's an answer.

A business link posted with a question about a product and if anyone has comments or for the general interest of the group isn't spam. However, see next.

A business posting a link to their business with no regard for the groups charter _is_ spam. However, see next.

A link to your business in your .sig isn't spam if the content of the message is in keeping with the groups charter. i.e. your not just following up for the reason of advertising your site.

It ain't that difficult to understand.

Mike;

Thanks for the link to the groups charter. I see that the charter does not specifically state that "Wanted to Buy" requests are ok or not ok, but it does state that "It is also meant to be a forum for buying and selling parts by non-commercial vendors." So, I guess my "Wanted to Buy" post was ok. Again thanks for the groups charter.

OK! After a 2 month long search we have found a Willys Wagon and have purchased it. It's advertised as a 1950, but we are a bit skeptical - it does not have the "pointed and chrome stripped" 1950's grill. Looks more like a 1949 or an early 1950 before they went to the new grill. We know that in those years Willys did release cars in "half year" increments, perhaps that is what we have - an early 1950.

It has a Chevy 235 straight 6 with a Turbo 400 transmission, has been raised, has large tires and has been painted. We suspect the restoration/conversion has been done by several hands - some of the work is well done, and some is, well, not so good. It's a good vehicle to fiddle with and slowy bring back up, and we can enjoy it in the meantime without having to do a frame up restore. It is a bit of head turner, and we will post some pics as soon as I can get a Web site going (it's in the works).

Thanks to the posters here for all of their leads, ideas, and observations. There are still quite a few of these wagons out there - many, it would seem, in Colorado and Wyoming, so if your willing to drive and make this a fun thing to do, the possibilities are there. How would you do this without the internet? I don't know.

Now we are looking for an old tub that has all of the original Willys tags and VIN regs, so we can reregister this one with the proper documentation (it has a California reissue VIN tag, further clouding the actual age and type of this wagon). May be off to Colorado Springs in the near future, we found a '50 tub and grill and fenders for not so much money.

Thanks again, be well, and hope to see you all down the road. I'll keep the board posted as to our progress.
