OK! After a 2 month long search we have found a Willys Wagon and have purchased it. It's advertised as a 1950, but we are a bit skeptical - it does not have the "pointed and chrome stripped" 1950's grill. Looks more like a 1949 or an early 1950 before they went to the new grill. We know that in those years Willys did release cars in "half year" increments, perhaps that is what we have - an early 1950.
It has a Chevy 235 straight 6 with a Turbo 400 transmission, has been raised, has large tires and has been painted. We suspect the restoration/conversion has been done by several hands - some of the work is well done, and some is, well, not so good. It's a good vehicle to fiddle with and slowy bring back up, and we can enjoy it in the meantime without having to do a frame up restore. It is a bit of head turner, and we will post some pics as soon as I can get a Web site going (it's in the works).
Thanks to the posters here for all of their leads, ideas, and observations. There are still quite a few of these wagons out there - many, it would seem, in Colorado and Wyoming, so if your willing to drive and make this a fun thing to do, the possibilities are there. How would you do this without the internet? I don't know.
Now we are looking for an old tub that has all of the original Willys tags and VIN regs, so we can reregister this one with the proper documentation (it has a California reissue VIN tag, further clouding the actual age and type of this wagon). May be off to Colorado Springs in the near future, we found a '50 tub and grill and fenders for not so much money.
Thanks again, be well, and hope to see you all down the road. I'll keep the board posted as to our progress.
